Whitley Bay Rotary Supporting Children in Nepal

Childreach Nepal is part of Childreach International, a UK based movement of children’s charities working in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the UK, recently came to talk to the Whitley Bay Rotary Club as part of Rotary’s International Month.
During the evening Joy, Wendy and Lynne from Childreach International explained to the club members their vision of Childreach and how they were helping children worldwide to unlock their potential in life by improving childrens' access to healthcare, education and child protection.
Joy Grenyer – Fundraising Team Manager, Nepal explained that there current fundraising campaign ‘Taught Not Trafficked’ was to enable them to raise £2,500 to build a single earthquake proof classroom in Nepal. She said, "It was estimated that 20,000 children from Nepal had been trafficked during the year of the earthquake. However, if a child had a school to go to, it was 80% less likely to be involved in trafficking."
She continued to say that, "Children who had lost homes, schools and family members were forced into sex work, domestic work and other forms of exploitation and abuse. So, rebuilding classrooms in remote mountain villages was just the beginning of preventing this terrible trade from happening."
President Tore Skjaerstad said how he was delighted that the club had been able to support the project with a donation of £ 900 saying that, "By helping to fund this project, Rotary was not just enabling the construction of a classroom, but was taking part in a much bigger and longer term project to keep these children safe for the future. Educating families, teachers and local authorities on the dangers of trafficking, is a vital part of that plan."
