For the past seventy years the Rotary Club of Whitley Bay has been recognising the outstanding achievements of some of North Tyneside's Young Citizens in the community with the award of the Civic Cups.
This was recently celebrated at a special meeting of the Rotary Club of Whitley Bay on November 18th. The awards this year were presented by Tommy Mulvenna, Chairman of North Tyneside Council and the four winners were from Monkseaton High School Courtney Rendles and Carla Melaco and from Whitley Bay High School Patrick Quinn and Annis Britton.
All the winners gave a brief outline to club members and visitors as to why their school had nominated them for these special awards and club President David Wilkinson said, "I am delighted to welcome the staff and students from the schools and to listen about the wonderful contributions they have made to our community. It is refreshing to hear what these young people have been able to achieve, when we hear so many negative stories."
Once the students had been presented with their cups and cash prizes the club was delighted to invite the students and staff for an evening meal, which was rounded off with an entertaining speech from council chair Tommy Mulvenna.
