CENTENARY LUNCHEON CELEBRATIONS FOR WHITLEY BAY ROTARY CLUB
WELL, THEY WERE ALL THERE!!
Yes, it was all happening on Sunday 29th of October at our Centenary Celebration Lunch in the St Mary’s Suite at the Spanish City Dome here in Whitley Bay.
Why? Because Whitley Bay Rotary Club was celebrating a birthday of 100 years of service to the community, with a special three-course lunch with eighty fellow Rotarians, guests, wives, partners and local dignitaries to boot!
In between each of the three courses, we were given a short historical vignette of the three stages of our history; from Eric 1923 – 45; Roger 1945- 1990; and Liz 1990 -2023; all of which reminded us of Rotary’s contribution to the town. From the construction of the Sea Front Panama Gardens in the 1930’s to the Town Centre Clock in the nineties to the annual town centre Christmas Tree and the Shiremoor Bypass as Rotary Way, the mini-bus to Whitley Bay Mencap at the turn of the century….. and the list went on and on. Yes, it was a great reminder to us, and all our guests what we had achieved over all those years.
Guest speakers included Lucy Winskell – His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant; local MP Sir Alan Campbell; Paul Hansen – CEO North Tyneside Council; Stephen Rose – Rotary District Governor all of whom packed as much as they could into their five minute time slot.
This was followed by entertainment from Vieux Carre` Jazzmen for the final hour or so, amidst laughter, chatter and a catch up with old friends with a look down memory lane from our archives so skilfully put together by Yvonne.
And the final toast of the day….Rotary – and the next hundred years!!
