Dove Marine Laboratory
Well, if you’ve ever wondered what goes on in that funny little red bricked building, that’s on the edge of the road facing Cullercoats Bay, well, we discovered it at Rotary tonight!
It’s the home of the Dove Marine Laboratory run by Newcastle University and our guest tonight was Hanna Lloyd-Hartley who is the resident Marine Biologist.
Hanna, with her innate enthusiasm took us into the world of sea life and in particular, plankton and its important role in monitoring the indicators of our ever changing sea side environment.
Hanna showed us images of life on the sea bed 5 miles out of Blyth!….images not to be missed as we had to guess what microscope life turned into when it got older. This brought an attentive audience to its eating senses ….with haddock, codling, sole, hake etc all on the menu at our local chippy!!
Hanna was a lovely and passionate speaker that enthralled us all with what goes on beneath the waves and its importance on the early signs of global changes.
A fascinating insight into the cycle of life on the seabed on our Northeast shoreline.
