FOOD FOR THOUGHT AT THIS EASTER TIME
During the month of March, our new President Liz Hayes has encouraged us to be mindful of the mental and social issues the Covid pandemic has had on us all.
To this end, she has introduced a new Rotary concept where the club will endeavour each month to allocate specific donations to areas of our community during the government’s COVID restrictions and lockdown.
This month she has encouraged us all to spare a thought for those struggling over the Easter period with food and ‘treat’ shortages!
Firstly, President Liz visited the local food bank, based on the Meadow Well Estate. Here we donated seventy-seven eggs and a further twenty-one eggs to the Refuge in North Shields. This in total made ninety-eight eggs in all, one for each year that Whitley Bay Rotary Club has been in existence.
Secondly, during the month of March club members collected over seven huge boxes of food, toiletries and domestic items all from their own shopping trollies. These items were donated to the refugee centre ‘Walking With’ based in Wallsend – a local charity the club has supported extensively in previous years.
In addition to the food, the club supplied one hundred and sixty chocolate Easter Eggs bought by club members with an additional donation of twenty eggs from the supermarket chain ASDA. This made a grand total of one hundred and eighty eggs and a magnificent total of two hundred and seventy-eight eggs donated in all!
President Liz said that during her trips to ASDA to purchase the Easter Eggs she had many curious looks and comments: ‘So many people said that I must be a chocoholic, have dozens of kids, or can you leave some on the shelves for me!’.
Finally, the cashier said, ‘I’ve never sold some many eggs in one transaction, how many kids have you actually got?’……to which Liz just smiled and said, ‘Well, it was all in aid of my good figure!’
Our pictures show Liz in action collecting the eggs from Asda, filling the car to the brim,
delivering to the Food Bank with Jackie Dickinson and lastly food and Easter Eggs to Joan Hoult CEO at ‘Walking With’.
