Coquet Park First School Show Off Their ‘Pop Bottle Greenhouse’ with Help from Members of Whitley Bay Rotary Club
For the past six months the children from Coquet Park First School have been busy drinking and collecting lemonade bottles to help build a unique ‘pop bottle’ greenhouse in their school in Whitley Bay.
The wooden frame for the eco friendly pop bottle greenhouse was purchased, built and assembled over five summer days by members of Whitley Bay Rotary Club and made ready for use by the children in the autumn term.
The eco greenhouse will now complement the successful wild life and allotment area at the school. The greenhouse will be used not only to grow summer fruits such tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and other healthy goodies, but as an educational instrument in helping to provide awareness for all things ‘eco’ and environmental.
The greenhouse was opened on a special ‘Eco School Day’ by the current Rotary president Terry Took and Rotarian Brian Royce, who was instrumental in putting together the idea and erecting the greenhouse with his fellow rotarians.
Past president Brian said; "Well done to all the children for collecting 1,300 plastic bottles in less than a year. You are now putting them to a really good alternative use and perhaps reducing land fill and possible ocean pollution’.
President Terry added, "And I shall look forward to coming back next year and eating all the tomatoes and anything else you have managed to grow!"
To conclude the afternoon's Eco event, the school's ‘Green Ambassadors’ presented Brian and Terry with a framed picture of their autumnal tree. Each pupil had contributed to the picture by adding their autumn leaf finger print to make up a complete ‘Eco Tree’.
