Whitley Bay Rotary – Supporting the BAY Foodbank

“I really wish that there were no Foodbanks, but the reality is there is a huge demand out there”
Rev. Alan Dickinson – Chairman BAY Foodbank

The BAY Foodbank was originally started in 2012 with the idea of helping those in the local community on short-term need to feed those who were deemed to be most vulnerable and at risk.
From this small enterprise, based in a storeroom at the Methodist Church in Whitley Bay, the campaign and organization quickly gathered the support of local churches and the idea of ‘Love In A Box’, became the motto that still holds good today eight years on.
The current location of the Foodbank is now at the Barn on the Meadow Well Estate in North Shields. Where once there was a humble beginning in a small box room, there is now an enterprise set in a small warehouse, packed to the rafters with a variety of stock, all being delivered to the four corners of North Tyneside.
Most days sees an average delivery of thirty to forty parcels to needy families from North Shields to Wideopen to Whitley Bay and beyond and considering this includes collections from supermarkets all across North Tyneside it ensures that the drivers are kept very busy!!

Our Rotary Club is delighted to support the Foodbank once again with a small donation from our reserve funds and with two big sweetie boxes for the staff, volunteers and young visitors to suck on whilst putting parcels together for others!

President Liz said she was delighted to be at the Foodbank, having heard and supported it personally for so many years:
‘It is great to be here and see for myself the volume of donations involved and to finally meet Alan and Jackie Dickinson who have done so much for so many people over these last eight years or more’.

Our pictures show the Foodbank store and President Liz with the manager Jackie Dickinson receiving the cheque.
