Whitley Bay Rotary – Supporting the BAY Foodbank

“I really wish that there were no foodbanks, but the reality is there is a huge demand out there”  Rev. Alan Dickinson – Chairman The BAY Foodbank

The BAY Foodbank originally started in 2012 and is continuing to provide a much-needed outlet for so many people and their families in North Tyneside.
From a small enterprise, based in the storeroom of the Methodist Church in Whitley Bay, the organisation quickly gathered the support of local churches and the idea of, ‘Love In A Box’, became the motto that still holds good today eleven years after its inception.
The current location of the Foodbank is now at the Barn on the Meadow Well estate in North Shields. Where once there was a humble beginning in a small box room, there is now an enterprise set in a warehouse, with additional storage in containers in the car park!!!
Everywhere there are boxes, packets, jars etc. where food is carefully labelled, parcels packed and ready for the off - all delivered to the doors of needy North Tyneside residents and, to keep things ‘green’, delivered on a designated electric vehicle.

Most days sees an average delivery of forty plus parcels to families from North Shields to Wideopen to Whitley Bay and beyond. Considering this includes donations from supermarkets across North Tyneside, it ensures that the drivers are kept very busy from dawn to dusk!!!

Our Rotary Club and its members were delighted to support the food bank once again with a donation of £2,000 from our funds enabling this very worthy cause to continue to support families in the Borough.

President John said he was delighted to be back at the Foodbank, having personally supported it for many years.
‘It is great to be here and see for myself the volume of donations involved and to meet up with Jackie once again. She has recently received an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Civil Law) from Newcastle University for all she has done these last ten years in running and motivating so many people to ensure the success of this much need good cause.’

Our pictures show the foodbank store and President John with Jackie receiving the cheque, joined by fellow club members.
