George Davies Art Competition High School 6th Form Show Their Artistic Talents

Three students were awarded prizes for their artistic skills at a recent exhibition held in the Jam Jar Cinema Foyer at Whitley Bay. George Davies was a former Whitley Bay Rotarian and an accomplished watercolour artist. He set up a trust found some years ago to help recognise, reward and support the work of local artists in the North East and in particular the work of young people in our schools.
This year it was the turn of Whitley Bay High School and there were two age categories representing A level and GCSE students who ably demonstrated their talents.

All the entrants work was carefully selected and chosen by the ‘team’ and President John Clarkson rewarded the students with monetary vouchers which could be spent in the school’s art shop.
All the students were eligible to receive the award and his daughter Mrs Irene Parritt said she was delighted to see such a range of talent and was sure her father would have approved of the three eventual winners Faith Kirkwood, Fiona Smith and Oliver Paul who were each awarded their certificates.
In a packed foyer at the Jam Jar Cinema last Friday evening students and their guests saw the prizes being presented by Irene Parritt and Jack Ingham, an ex-student of the High School now studying Architecture at Newcastle University, who spoke of the difficulty in selecting and making their choices. The quality of the artwork and the number of entries had been outstanding. However difficult decisions had to be made and in the end first Prize went to Oliver Paul second prize to Fiona Smith and third prize to Faith Kirkwood. The exhibition at the Jam Jar Cinema is currently on display and will also continue at the High School from 28th June until the end of term.
