The Whitley Bay Rotary Club - Civic Cups
The young peoples’ award – Civic Cups has been running since 1943. That’s eighty-one years ago and that’s how long we have been running this award for young people in our school community.
So for eighty-one years, the Whitley Bay Rotary Club has been recognising the outstanding achievements of some of North Tyneside's young people, with the awarding of a Civic Cup. Each individual is nominated by their school as they have performed an outstanding contribution to their community.
And what is amazing in this particular year is that one of this year’s recipients, Michael Olds from Whitley Bay High School, was repeating what his father had achieved thirty-five years ago!
On Tuesday night a special ‘Civic Cups Evening’ was held at the Tynemouth Golf Club. The awards this year were presented by the Chairman of North Tyneside Council, Councillor Brian Burdis with two winners from each school: Monkseaton High School - Lewis Kemp and Abbie Fitzpatrick and from Whitley Bay High School - Aoife McCurry and Michael Olds.
All the winners outlined to club members and guests why their school had nominated them for these special awards and club President John Clarkson said.
'I am delighted to welcome Cllr Brian Burdis and the staff from Monkseaton High, Head of School, Chris Drew and Kim Hay Assistant Head. They have brought along two students Lewis Kemp and Abbie Fitzpatrick.
We also welcome the staff from Whitley Bay High, Head Teacher Steve Wilson and Matt Bland, Head of Year Eleven with their two students, Aoife McCurry and Michael Olds.
These four young people have given their time and energy to make a contribution to our community, so let’s hear what they have to say.’
First up were, Whitley Bay High School: Matt Bland, Head of Year Eleven, reminded us of the impact of Covid on this year group and how difficult it has been to bridge that missing gap. However, his two students had been on a huge journey and so the school nominated Aoife and Michael as outstanding examples of what could be achieved.

First up was Aoife McCurry;
• Aoife McCurry – is a big fashion fan and hopes to pursue a career in this field. To support this end, she is now studying Textiles at GCSE, having worked every Tuesday in the Whitley Bay St Oswald’s Charity Shop selling clothes and accessories and decorating the window. This has helped to support her passion and improved her self-confidence in dealing and speaking to customers.
• Michael Olds – had been working at the YMCA every Sunday since the start of Year Eleven. He had been a Scout Leader at St Mary’s for many years, which was curtailed by the Covid virus and he was now following in his dad’s footsteps, by being the second person in his family to be awarded a Civic Cup from the Whitley Bay Rotary Club.
Monkseaton High: Kim Hay, Assistant Head brought Lewis and Abie. She said that the two students Lewis and Abbie were perfect examples of what young people could achieve in their school and community; Lewis was particularly good with new students and Abbie was the ‘mother hen of year eleven’!
• Lewis Kemp – Lewis admitted to being a nervous young man when he was in Year Nine but having joined the school council, things have changed and he is now a regular member of the Northumberland Police Cadets. This has given him lots of experiences, culminating in the Cenotaph parade in London in November last year. He is also an active member of the charity ‘Tin On The Wall’ which he supports with leaflet drops and collections etc. for local charities.
• Abbie Fitzpatrick – Abbie admitted she could talk for England...and almost went on to demonstrate that! However, in her busy life she is involved in football (playing and coaching), is a Marine Cadet, (planning lessons / field crafts, & Vice-Chair), travelling the UK with the cadets and has a River Thames boat licence, volunteers at the local marina, and makes a cracking cup of tea!!
After the presentations Cllr. Brian added; ‘Thank you for Rotary for hosting this wonderful event and helping us to celebrate the achievements of these young people. All these young people should be proud, schools should be proud, everyone should be proud…
These young people are speakers to that affect…
Well done!!!
Each of the students received a cash award, certificate and an engraved cup.
After the presentation staff and students stayed for an evening meal with a chatty and informal end to their visit.
