Whitley's Scouting Grand National
The Whitley Bay Rotary Club has in recent years been supporting the 21st Whitley Bay Scouts and Trustees in their mission to assist the Mityana School Development Fund in Uganda.
Currently the scouts and trustees are supporting a building and refurbishment programme for two new school dormitories for the Kigogozi Primary School in Mityana.
Carolyn Taylor, chair of the trustees, makes regular visits to the school complex in Uganda to monitor, direct and advise on the progress being made in the re-building programme.
As this is one of the overseas developments that the Rotary Club supports, it was pleased to welcome back Carolyn at a recent club meeting.
At this special meeting, the club was delighted to hear of the progress being made throughout the school and to hear about the development and construction of the newly proposed dormitories, which will accommodate forty boys and girls, all of who would normally have to travel for over three hours to get to school.
Carolyn explained that the building of the dormitories at the school would enable the children to be accommodated overnight, because currently they were sleeping on the floor of their classroom!
Rotary President David Wilkinson said, "We are very keen to support this new venture. Therefore, I am proposing that we donate funds of £1,000 to help furnish the interior of the dormitories with new beds and lockers." President David added, "I am shocked to discover that these primary school children are currently having to sleep on the floors of their classrooms. As my wife currently works in a Whitley Bay First School, I cannot imagine the practical difficulties she would have to endure, if this was happening in Whitley Bay. So I am delighted that our Rotary Club will be able to help these young people and give them the opportunity not only to have a better learning experience, but aexperience, but a good nights’ sleep as well!"
