And now for something completely different...

And it was, as Neville Harris joined us on Tuesday night to talk about Monty Python, the TV show of the seventies. Famed for its zany humour, unconventional activities and absurd behaviour in which Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, John Cleese and Michael Pallin behaved often in rude and flamboyant comedy sketches; it left an older generation nonplussed at the time.

Neville reminded us with good humour of how the sketch show came about and their showbiz influences such as Beyond the Fringe, The Goon Show, At Last The 1948 Show, That Was The Week That Was and the Cambridge Foot Lights etc. all of which influenced the comic construction of the show.
In all they worked together with these influences from 1967 finishing with the film The Meaning of Life in 1983.

During this time, they had a creative process which had no leadership as such, but working independently on ideas and then arriving with such classic sketches as The Dead Parrot, Ministry of Silly Walks, The Lumber Jack Song and films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning Life etc.
And in true Monty Python style Neville finished with the eloquent line…’And why has this talk been so silly!’...and that put a full stop or a big foot to the end of the evening!!!
