Helen Golightly OBE
North East Enterprise Partnership
On Tuesday evening, Helen Golightly OBE joined us from the Northeast Enterprise Partnership.
To begin her talk, Helen told the club a little about her ‘humble’ beginnings from a small mining community, the first in her family to go to university, gain a degree in Town Planning and ultimately be awarded an OBE for her services to the Northeast Community.
In her current role, Helen told us that the principal aim of the Enterprise Partnership was to create an organisational plan for all parts of the business and social community in the North East working within Government Policies.
In essence this principal related to a number of points, but in general terms it related to:
• Having a sound working infrastructure for the communities,
• Creating more and better jobs,
• Establishing a greener energy profile,
• Having a better transport infrastructure,
• Inspiring developments in Health and Education,
• Investing in skills,
• Having employment inclusion and progression policies,
• Inspiring the general business sector to grow, which to date, the partnership had achieved with an increase of over 24,000 jobs in the North East.
Helping to achieve this, the Partnership has seventy people employed in the team, with an operating budget of around 1.5 billion pounds, since the inception of this ten-year programme.
To sum up, Helen’s talk was detailed, precise with an incredible fingertip knowledge, which in turn inspired a number of questions from the floor before a vote of thanks was given by our fellow Rotarian, Grant Smith.
