Kim McGuinness, Police Commissioner for Tyne and Wear was the guest speaker on 19 April and whatever our preconceptions were beforehand, she shattered them very quickly!!!
Firstly, she gave us a humorous assessment of our own meeting and then went on to explain her civilian role in the force, outlining thorny issues such as:-
How we need as a community to find a solution to the cause of crime as locking villains up is only a temporary solution
How we need to identify young people and their behavioural patterns
Where does all the money go
How can we grow the police force including putting more police on the beat, bringing back support teams, etc.
Finally, Kim did remind us that North Tyneside is still one of the safest places to live!
She completed her talk by fielding questions around cyber-crime, why criminals aren’t punished properly for their crimes, what has happened to the Probation Service, traffic control, County Lines, social media and its numerous problems.
It is fair to say Kim gave us succinct and comprehensive answers which we all found interesting and thought provoking.
In the absence of President Liz, Vice President Roger thanked Kim for her time and Gordon gave a word of thanks on behalf of the club.
It was to say the least a fascinating evening!
