Prof Chris Day Visits Whitley Bay Rotary Club
Cricketing pals met up at our recent meeting at the golf club this week, when President Roger introduced Professor Chris Day, Vice Chancellor of Newcastle University. Chris gave us a fascinating insight into how the university operates in our community from free public lectures to outreach school centres in areas such as Walker to being the first university to employ and welcome Ukrainian students and staff.

These days the university has over 30,000 students generating £276 million pounds in our community. Chris is responsible for some 6,000 staff and the uni was recently short listed for the top university in country. Unfortunately it didn’t win, but came 8th out of 200. It is particularly noted for community research where new projects and products are developed for industry both here and abroad, so perhaps now the image of ‘sitting in ivory towers’ is at last no longer relevant!!
