St Nicholas Festival was back in Whitley Bay for its 16th year with schoolchildren and stallholders preparing to take centre stage.
The two days of festivities began on Friday with more than 200 pupils and families taking part in a lantern procession through the town and up to St Pauls Church for a short carol service. The packed church gave all the children the opportunity to meet and hear St Nicholas and for each of the four schools taking part, receive their allowance of gold chocolate coins presented this year by Rotary President David Wilkinson.
Children from Star of the Sea RC Primary School, plus Whitley Lodge, Marine Park and Rockcliffe first schools have been putting their finishing touches to the lanterns sponsored by the Rotary Club, in the previous weeks' art activities. At the head of the parade was a large angel lantern, which followed a drum thumping Samba unit and featured this year a longer parade from Marine Park First School up to and along Park View to end at St Pauls Church. Here all their children and their families were entertained by an enthusiastic St. Nicholas and his storytelling guitar helper.
The festival opened on Friday lunchtime with stallholders from Northumberland selling a range of food and gifts and continued through Saturday and Sunday. Items featured for sale in the tented town centre were wild honeys, local cheeses, cakes, mulled wines, fresh breads, patisseries, meats plus Christmas gifts and a range of craft stalls with a local hot chestnut stall.
In addition to keep the children happy there was a variety of fairground rides with music and dance performances throughout the day on Saturday.
