FROM WHITLEY BAY - TO MEXICO, TO LOURDES, TO SOUTH KOREA.
Each year our Rotary Club gives enterprising young people a travel award to help them do something special either for themselves or their community.
Last year we awarded three young people with enterprising ideas to do just that - Jack Brownlee, Angus Henry, and William Beattie and what a brilliant and fascinating account they gave of themselves and their adventures abroad.
First up was Angus who last summer travelled to Mexico with the aid of an organisation, M10, whose motto is – ‘Preparing today’s youth for tomorrows opportunities’.
And that is exactly what it did for Angus, working with other young people from across the globe to build a small house and spending time working in an orphanage, where he said the food was amazing!!!.... Angus’ motto for life is ‘’Perspective, perspective, perspective’’.
Next up was Jack who this summer is travelling to South Korea to spend 25 nights under canvas, camping in a world Scouting Jamboree; to do this he has raised £4,000 to join fifty-five thousand other scouts from all over the world. He hopes to abseil, bungee jump and maybe do some cooking whilst away.
Last up was William, who last Easter travelled to Lourdes in France, a religious shrine for healing and health care. William who is studying at Thomas Moore School in North Shields helped to take a young person with special educational needs and thus enabled their parents to have some much need respite time. During his visit to Lourdes William helped in the procession of a blessed sacrament, oversaw a mass for the sick and took part in a candlelight procession…. a very moving occasion for a young man.
Each of the visitors was given a vote of thanks by three Rotarians Liz, Garry, and Julian who hosted and organised this special event.
So, if you are a young person looking for help on a special one off trip, have a look at our website and fill in an application. We are always looking to help young people in our community.
