Whitley Bay Young People’s Centre

The Whitley Bay Young People’s Centre, formerly the Whitley Bay Boys Club is situated behind the Ice Rink on Chestnut Avenue W/Bay, NE25 8HR.
Rod Clark, a member (and past president) of our club recently invited several fellow Rotarians to look around the premises of the Young People’s Centre.
Rod had recently become a trustee for the club and was looking for help in revitalising the centre, which had been closed for many months due to COVID restrictions and this once vibrant people’s community had sadly fallen onto difficult times. We could all see the potential of the space and rooms the centre had to offer, many of which were richly decorated and included offices, a kitchen, music room, snooker room, badminton court and break-out rooms etc.

However, Rod, keen as ever, was not to be put off and in recent months after our visit he has been hard at work, building and encouraging the centre back to life. Whilst there is still much to be done our Rotary Club was delighted to be able to support Rod in his formal request to replace the existing rather ‘dubious’ cooker with a new domestic one. This will help to kick-start the kitchen activities and enable the centre to provide basic catering facilities for all users.
As yet the cooker has not arrived for installation, but we all hope to be back very soon to see what else Rob and his new team have managed in the intervening months since we were last there.

This registered charity provides a combination of outreach and building based activities including arts and crafts, drug awareness, health eating, various sports, and regular weekend overnight ‘fun’ events.
